CEFR A2
The impostor phenomenon is the situation where highly accomplished, successful individuals paradoxically believe they are frauds, who ultimately will fail and be unmasked as incompetent. It can affect anyone, no matter their social status, work background, skill level, or degree of expertise.
Impostors attribute success in their lives to luck. They seem unable to internalize their accomplishments, however successful they are in their field. High-achieving, highly successful people often suffer from this, so impostor syndrome doesn’t equate with low self-esteem or a lack of self-confidence. The continued persistence of impostor syndrome will take away the joys of success and result in self-doubt and anxiety.
