Given the multitude of areas where English is spoken across the world, variances are unavoidable. Despite their many similarities, British and American English have enough variances in their versions of the English language that people from both countries may not always comprehend what the other is saying.
Not only are there 160 various dialects of English, but there are also variations in spelling and even terms used to describe one or more things.
Did you know that the variation in spelling terms such as American color and British color, or humor and humor, stems from the Brits adopting their now-called British terminology from the Old French language? When it arrived in America, the spelling was simplified. As with many other distinctions between American and British English, grammatical adaptation had a role.
